Filtration systems are usually sized to circulate and filter your water twice in 8 hours. Run the pump 10–12 hours a day in summer, and 3–5 hours a day in winter.
Run it during the hottest part of the day. Sunlight burns chemicals out of the water faster, so filtering while the sun is strongest keeps chemistry more stable.
No. Draining should be left to a licensed, experienced, insured professional. Fiberglass pools can float out of the ground, and vinyl liners can shrink within hours. Leaving the pump running only protects equipment from freezing while the power stays on.
If your pool is closed, drain all equipment through its freeze plugs or valves. If it's open year-round, install a freeze guard — it switches the pump on automatically once the outside temperature drops below freezing, and attaches to any time clock. Like a running pump, it won't help during a power outage.
Evaporation peaks on warm days with cool nights. Without a heater or solar cover, a healthy pool shouldn't lose more than about 1 inch of water per week. The bucket test tells you which it is:
If the outside level drops more than the inside level, the pool likely has a leak — repeat the test after rain to confirm. It works for gunite, vinyl, and fiberglass pools alike.
